ÅXFOLIATION

What is Exfoliation?

Exfoliation syndrome is a condition recognized in an examination of the eye if the eye doctor is trained to know what to look for. It appears in the doctor's microscope as “tiny snowflakes” in the eye.

Åxfoliation is not only an early warning sign for complicated cataracts or glaucoma, but can be a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Jofe Eye Institute conducted a research, which showed that about 40% of Eastern European patients over the age of 70 have exfoliation [pseudoexfoliation], many with cataracts and/or glaucoma.

Regular eye exam, including special exfoliation syndrome test by a specifically trained professional, is recommended to all patients over 40, especially those of Eastern European ancestry.

Both locations of the Institute – in Brooklyn and Queens – offer the exfoliation syndrome test as part of a complete eye exam.
